KILLER KATE! THE HALLOWEEN HORRORS COLLECTION

You have to love a film with an exclamation mark in its title. There’s something so ‘I’m screaming this title LOUD so you will remember it!’ about that one little stroke with a dot underneath. And remember KILLER KATE! you will. But not necessarily for all the right reasons. There’s a sense of early nineties camp horror anarchy about writer director Andrew Feld’s debut feature – KILLER KATE! (2018). Walking the tightrope between extreme graphic violence and insane comic brutality he manages to navigate both with relative aplomb.

Is it the most sure-footed debut? No, not really but God and the genre audience loves a trier and Feld tries very, very hard. His wife, Alexandra Feld (Slate Your Name), takes the leading role as one of two sisters who rent a house in California for a bachelorette party at the behest of their dying father. Past tensions bubble quickly to the surface but are no match for a local family with murderous intent on their minds. Trotting out one home invasion trope after another the film is at its most enjoyable when it plays exactly to your expectations and, if you like the sub-genre, you’ll appreciate the effort which is largely a family affair on screen and off.  The legendary Tiffany Shepis makes an appearance as…well you’ll see, and her presence alone is worth the ticket price for some, if not all, genre fans. She definitely makes the most of her on-screen time and proves, in one particularly invigorating moment, that she can wield an axe just as well if not better than a certain Mr Nicholson in a certain Stanley Kubrick pic.

A throwback synth heavy score adds mood to the proceedings and the crisp cinematography lend a professional veneer to this relatively low budget entry.  It’s definitely an adult beverage and a pizza flick so take it for what it is and its brisk one hour 20 minute run time will fly by. It gives you exactly what that exclamation mark promises and nothing else. And sometimes that’s all that’s needed.
